Hey there squirrel friend,
I’m James — a graphic designer and photographer from the Pacific Northwest. I love the overlaps of storytelling, branding, and queer pop culture, and how design lets me help others bring their vision to life.
My creative adventure began in 2013 when I moved to downtown Portland, drawn by a newfound passion for graphic design. Originally studying photography, I discovered my love for design after taking an exploratory elective that shifted my creative path. Over four years at Portland State University, I honed my craft in both photography and design, developing a unique ability to create visually compelling work grounded in authenticity and originality. After graduating in 2017, the connections I made led me into the dynamic worlds of creative agencies and marketing teams, where I sharpened my eye for what makes design not just good, but exceptional.
Along the way, I’ve had the honor of branding local businesses, photographing everything from Portland Pride to Design Week and university commencements, showcasing my work in galleries, and even having one of my photos chosen as a default wallpaper for the Ubuntu operating system.
Good design is like a love letter — bold, intentional, and crafted to tell a story that truly resonates. It should never exploit, exclude, or mislead. Instead, it’s meant to connect, uplift, and celebrate everyone it touches. As visual communicators, we have both the privilege and the responsibility to embrace inclusivity, honor diversity, and use our creativity to say something that matters. When design is done right, it’s not just memorable — it’s meaningful, empowering, and true to its purpose.
My approach is grounded in authenticity, adding a touch of personality — and an (em)dash of sparkle — to every project!
Through my work, I aim to highlight the vibrant intersections of identity, culture, and storytelling. As a queer creative, I understand the power of representation and strive to design with inclusivity at the forefront—ensuring every project reflects the diverse world we live in. This perspective informs not just the work I produce but also the connections I build with clients and collaborators.
